Information for Referrers

What is ARC?

Our workshops are based on the teachings of Dr. Gabor Mate and the trauma-aware research into early parenting by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.

Our focus is on helping parents build a positive attachment, a good relationship, and a strong connection with their child by providing evidenced-based information and skills in an interactive and reflective, safe environment.

Through our professional experience, we have identified a gap in psychological information for first-time parents who have experienced their own childhood trauma. Many of the parents we have worked with have not had access to psycho-educational knowledge, support, information, and skills around becoming a parent.

Our workshops include:

  • Parenting Styles

  • Attachment Relationships

  • Types of Attachment

  • Nervous System Regulation (self-soothing and self-care)

  • Brain Anatomy and the impact of the amygdala and pre-frontal cortex on our behaviours

  • Complex PTSD – the symptoms

  • Trauma ‘Triggers’ versus ‘Glimmers’

  • Dissociation and Dysregulation as a parent and how this affects the child/ren

  • Take home information packs

Our workshops are direct, brief, easily applicable, and easy to understand. Participants are encouraged to participate and interact with the content. All our workshops are delivered in a safe, respectful, trauma-informed environment, with just a hint of humour.

Who is ARC for?

Our workshops are ideally suited to:

  • First-time parents

  • Parents with limited supports

  • Parents who have a background of trauma (DV, mental health, abuse, disability)

  • Parents who are overwhelmed with a new baby, parenting

  • Pregnant women wanting to better prepare for the baby’s arrival

  • Parents wanting some more strategies, skills, and information around self-care, self-soothing, and positive modelling for themselves

  • Parents wanting a better relationship, or to repair the relationship with their child/ren

How is ARC delivered?

We run 3-hour workshops, over a 2-week period (6 hours of content in total) on a weekday.

Our groups are at their most dynamic between 8-12 participants, however we also offer small groups (3-5 participants), and individual sessions for families.

We include resources and take-home notes for all participants.

We can provide an additional child-sitting service for bookings of 6 participants or more, with a qualified early childhood teacher at $200 per workshop.
